If you have seen a Book Rap advertised and would like to take part. This is what you should do:

  1. Locate and read the book. Check that you have sufficient copies for students and other teachers (if required).
  2. Check that you have the necessary email access.
  3. Email the Book Rap Manager - this is the teacher who has volunteered to coordinate the project. His/her name will be included in the email you may have received about the planned Book Rap or will be included in the notice on the oz-Teachernet website. In this message, you need to:
    • introduce yourself and provide email and phone contact details
    • tell the manager something about your class or where you are located
    • ask for the rap points in advance
    • provide a full list of the email addresses you would like included in the book rap mailing list
  4. Plan set times in the week when your class will read and respond to the rap points and to messages sent by other students. Make this as interactive as you can - it is a conversation rather than a broadcast.

Treat this activity in a positive way. It is a real opportunity for students to experience online communication with their peers and to write for a real audience. If there are lapses in ettiquette, then treat this as "a teachable moment" - the opportunity to talk about what is and is not appropriate in this context.
